Consultation&Advice

Registered dietitians are qualified experts in diet and nutrition. They give advice on all aspects of eating and diet. This includes special diets for medical conditions, such as a diet for someone who has coeliac disease.

The title "dietitian" is protected by law. This means you are not allowed to call yourself a dietitian unless you are properly qualified and registered with the HCPC.

Registered dietitians are regulated by statute. The professional association for dietitians is the British Dietetic Association.

If you are considering booking an appointment with me, here is what it will involve:

I will explore the diet-related issue/s that have caused you to contact me or be referred to me.  It is useful to know what, in an ideal world, you would like to achieve from seeing me.

To get a full picture of your diet and how it relates to your health and lifestyle, I will ask you for key information on the following:

  • Medical history: information on any medical physical and mental health problems you have, when they started and how (if) they are managed, including any medication you take.

  • Social history – home situation and occupation overview, to assess whether this affects your overall diet and health.

  •  Medical nutrition history – do you have any diagnosed medical nutrition problems such as coeliac disease, allergies or intolerances? If so how are these managed?

  • Diet history – what the problems are and what you think the reasons for these are.  To get an idea of your current diet, I may ask for a diet diary – a record of your food and drink intake over 5 days. (This includes what you ate, with added details about when and with whom you ate, plus any feelings or reactions to food if it’s relevant). If you have  a smart phone there is an app we can use instead.

  • Thoughts, feelings and behaviours relating to food

For adults with emotional eating problems we will spend time working on the emotional side of eating

If relevant, I will measure your weight and height, and for children compare this to their previous growth on growth charts.

Once I have collected all the information I need, I’ll be able to advise you on the changes needed, create a meal plan especially to suit you, your life, your schedule, including food preferences and substitutes where applicable, to help you to reach your targets towards better health. We will set some goals to work towards before the next session (if a follow up is required or desired).

If necessary I may write a report to your GP, copied in to you and other professionals involved in your health care (if you permit this), summarising my findings and recommendations, including any requests for changes in prescriptions or referrals to other services.
